Well, I just wanted you to know they are related. Well, sort of.
If you read the “Meet Kim” page on this website, you already know my reputation in our family for cooking.
Well, Henry and the kids have cut me a lot slack over the years with how I go about providing home cooked meals with such a busy schedule.
Unfortunately I read the labels in the store when I am grocery shopping. I try very hard to limit the overly processed foods on the shelves for fear of what those long unpronounceable words on the label do to us after we eat them.
I do not own a microwave. I have been given three of them away over the years and they made great gifts, I just don’t like the idea of moving molecules in my food to make it hot.
Fundamentally, there has to be something wrong with that. I don’t know why, buy that’s what I believe.
So we eat food that has been in a real oven or on a real stove.
I remember when I was a girl and mom would have big jars in the corner of the kitchen counter full of flower, rice, spaghetti noodle and sugar. Then next to it there was a cabinet with a role up door and behind it were shelves full of small bottles full of spices.
When she cooked, all the cookies and cakes came from recipes that started from scratch.
Now in my kitchen it was Betty Crocker in a box time. If I can add water with an egg or two and put it in the oven, well, it was “home made”. After all it wasn’t prepackaged with instructions to nuke it!
A funny thing happened when I started to make candles regularly. I started buying my candle jars for the container candles by the case. One day my sister and I were talking and she was asking if I had Mom’s old recipe for “ginger snap cookies”.
Rosie on the other hand has a box full of 4×6 cards full of recipes. As a matter fact, why didn’t she have the card, after all, that “is” Mom’s old box!
What a difference it makes when you try one from scratch versus one made from a box.
